Spring and Summer 2017 Collection

by Katie J. Evans

The Earth Alchemy Necklace is one of our new offerings. Shown here in detail and on the body, the sterling silver crossbar is echoed by the chain that supports the arms of this symbolic object. Currently available in Snakeskin Shed, our favorite transformative element.

New soldering techniques have allowed us to alchemize delicate strands of sterling silver chain, bringing a textile quality and graceful movement to new earring styles for the new Tears Collection.

Our Crescent Collection showcases the curves and openings of new shapes. We love the subtle difference this softer edge brings to our line.

And we are introducing more feathers into the collection - new shapes featuring feather elements with bright colors in neon blues and greens. We love the prominence of the Peacock, but we also carry Pheasant, Chicken, Turkey, and Peafowl feather options.

Memorial Jewelry

by Katie J. Evans

When I started HartVariations, I knew that I wanted to frame the work I was doing in the way that it gives new life to beautiful creatures from the natural world, but also how it brings intention to the wearer and their personal journeys of transformation. Because of my own experience of loss and how I was able to channel my grief into my art, I have long wanted my business to provide a way to help others do the same with those they have loved. Over the years I have encased ashes from pets, sons, mothers, cat and dog fur, soil, baby teeth, hair, and more.

I have come up with a few designs to begin with that work for ashes, fur, and soil. Soon we will be offering the diamond shaped option first on the online Etsy shop, and will likely introduce a triangle pendant style in the coming months. A bracelet option is in the works as well, but I really like the symbolism of how a necklace is worn over the heart.

The beauty of this kind of jewelry is how powerfully it affects the wearer. Having the essence of the loved one transformed lets us honor our grief with something to hold and touch, a link to the past and a sense of peace in the present.

Figuring out how to include a natural element (wing or snakeskin) on one side and the ashes on the other, was a big breakthrough for me. Some folks may want to position the necklace with the ashes facing in, as a more private form of remembrance. Another option will be little semi-precious stone altars. Those will be available in fluorite and calcite, with more to come as I find time to experiment with different semi-precious stones.

Thank you for entrusting HartVariations, wherever you may be in your journey of love, loss, and finding your way forward.

Newsletter Recap

Here is a recap of the newsletter for those that missed it! If you would like to be added to our email list, please sign up here.

Hello, and welcome to the cardinal Hart Variations Newsletter. We have so much to share!

This missive serves to bring you the highlights and updates here at Hart Variations. We are excited to be a growing business with much on the horizon and tons of plans of new and exciting designs.

Who is Hart Variations? The artist and drive behind the line is Katie, at the helm for these first six years of operation. As Hart Variations has grown, two more people have joined the team to help out in the Oakland studio. Michelle has been with us for two years and Julia just came on as an additional assistant.

Our Mission: with our jewelry we take elements of the natural world and breathe new life into them. With our pieces there is strong symbolism of transformation and rebirth, two aspects of survival that are richly embodied in the deeply personal creative process behind the work. Having an object with a connection to the beauty of impermanence, like our time here on Earth, reminds us daily to honor the struggle and keep our heads up.

We were featured recently in an edition of Creating Your Own Path podcast. "It was such an honor to chat with this rad lady! I'm always on the look out for good podcasts about creativity. She helped me articulate in new ways what it is that I do and why I do it, and the importance of my process."
See other interviews and articles that feature our work on our Press page.

Gold in the Pipeline...we have constant requests for offering golden toned options, and we hear them! There is a metal-specific process to our work, learn more about the formation of our pieces on our FAQ page and the gold segment on our blog. Creating our pieces in gold requires bezel setting instead of stained glass, with a different set of tools and materials. Instead of glass we use hand-cut quartz to cover and protect the element. We have two new necklaces in solid 14 karat gold, including the one above, which is available next week at Fiat Lux! Additionally, currently we offer some of our signature designs in a copper patina with rose gold-filled earrings and chain. Make sure to visit the Etsy shop for availability.

A new offering:
We have been working on a project that is at the emotional center of HartVariations--the Heart, as they say. A way to remember those we have loved and lost, to celebrate their souls through a talisman that can be worn and cherished.
One beautiful aspect of the process of the Tiffany Stained Glass Method is that a sacred object or material can be placed between the glass panes. We've designed Memorial Jewelry that can have ashes, fur, earth, etc., placed behind one of our butterfly wings or other signature elements, to be worn close to the skin in a private gesture of remembrance and honor.

New Designs coming soon!!
We have some cool new custom concepts in the works, very excited about the new designsTriple Polarity Birth Chart Ring and our Semi-Precious Stone Altar. These are custom ritual objects to recognize a loved one or a special place.

The Studio

Here's a peek inside the studio of Hart-Variations, so you can see the process and creation of our jewelry from inspiration to completed piece. There is a staging area for photography and display, a warm window spot for bright shots, the cutting room where all the glass is intricately measured and cut, some of the pendants waiting to be assembled with chain and clasps, and the founder of Hart-Variations, Katie making the magic happen.
